Though my father’s clinic at Forbesganj was named the Mit hila Ayurveda Bhavan (my grandfather was also
the assistant manager of the Mit hila
Printing Works at Madhubani, the first press printing Mait hili
in the early years of 20th century), it
never evoked in me any overt interest in Mit hila
or Mait hili during my school-days
which had no Mait hili teaching facilit ies (though being in Mit hila),
and so, I had to read Hindi as my mother-tongue in the language paper. Mait hili is an independent language having it s own script and grammar wit h
rich lit erary tradit ions and is as different from Hindi as is Tamil
from Telugu.
Fig. 56 ___ Mit hilakshar/Tirhuta
: the script of my mother - tongue, Maithili.
However,
my mother-tongue Maithili, used at home and in correspondence, on getting the
first opportunity became my language paper at the Ranchi College
in the PUC and in my ISc (1970-72) courses, where in the Ranchi College
Magazine of 1973 my article, Vishanu: Vish va Nav Jivanak Nirman on
viruses is probably the first scientific article in Maithili. I started writing
my diary in Maithili since my college days knowing Gandhi used to write his
diary in Gujarati.
In 1973, I was not only expelled from the Maithil mess of
the Darbhanga Medical College, my security money was also forfeited on my
utterance that the mess should include medicos of all castes, inhabiting
Mithila who are innate Maithils and not only Brahmins as such. * Though I am a Maithil Brahmin, thereafter I
remained reluctant to when Maithili movement considering it a caste-oriented,
secessionist movement till in 1991 inspired by Kamal Narayan Jha, Librarian,
the RDCIS, SAIL, Ranchi I started write
in Maithili again.
In fact, when K.N. Jha, asked me to write an
article in Maithili I recalled, (having listened from someone), that Lohia once
stepped into a newspaper office saying that he wanted to write something as he
had nothing in his pocket, the editor had agreed and to his great surprise,
Lohia had asked for a few pages and wrote then and there an article for getting
immediate remuneration.
Though I was not money-pressed when I was
asked to write by K. N. Jha, recalling Lohia’s that episode I wrote immediately
asking for a few pages from him and
then I was gradually initiated to Maithili movement. I wrote three articles
(the first as described on a house named ‘Mithila’ at Madikeri in the
Coorg area of Karnataka state and two later on the History of Mithila), which
were published in a local Maithili magazine, the Bharati.
On the removal of Maithili subject
from the BPSC Examination on 29.2.1992, I had written a letter in the Ranchi
Express in April 1992, protesting against it and demanding Maithili’s
recognition as the second official language of Bihar** in place of Urdu. It
prompted Ram Ekbal Singh ‘Vineet’, sub-editor to come in person with two other
workers
Pitambar Chaudhary and Lakshman
Jha who requested me to join the Maithili movement run by the newly founded,
‘Maithili Vikas Parishad’.
**Similarly on 15.12.2003,maithilsabha@yahoo.com removed
my membership when I tried
to gather some Maithils
without any caste-bias at the India gate,
N.Delhi on 9.12.2003 for the
Antarrashtriya Maithili Parishad(AMP), the coordinator,
Maithilsabha, R.N. Mishra, had accepted to be the president of the Delhi unit
on 7.10.2003}; even my statement on
passing the Bill by the Loksabha
for the inclusion of Maithili in the VIII
schedule of the Indian Constitution by the 100th Amendment on 22.12.2003
was not circulated. It resulted in launching AMPs website
http.//www.geocities.com/ maithili_parishad by padmanabh mishra,IIT,
Kharagpur on 21.3.2004. However, R.N.Mishra appreciated me at the
YOM (AMP) convention on 14.1.2007 at N. Delhi (focussed on flood contol,
infrastructure development and centres of excellence in MIthila, attended by S
C Jha, Advisor to PM, B P Sigh, ex-director,WB, Chaturanan Mishra, ex-
minister, GOI, A N Jha, ex-Election Commissioner, Mahabal Mishra,MLA, Delhi,
Gangesh Gunjan, etc.
**including Jharkhand
Accepting their request, I went through available
materials since 1905 and found out the remedial corrective. I rediscovered to
celebrate Janaki Navami (Baishakh Shukla 9) as Maithili Divas
which was in practice during 1930s as our Jatiya Parva i.e. Rashtriya
Parva for Mithila. A
small beginning at Ranchi had now established
Mother Janaki as the source of inspiration for Maithils of all nomenclatures in
and outside Mithila region, including the USA
and Canada .
Janaki Navami should replace International Women’s Day i.e. 8th March is
my firm view.
I
also proposed Mother Janaki as insignia
of the Antarrashtriya Maithili Parishad (AMP)
to remove confusion on caste-line propagated by
anti-Maithili lobby as well as to reestablish the
role of Mother’s power in national reconstruction as per
Hindu-Maithili traditions. The proposal was
gladly approved.
Seeing
the world-meets of other languages, through the MECON-SAIL’s Maithils’
Organisaton, the Bharati, I convened the First International Maithili
Conference at Ranchi
on June 19-20,1993, where
the Maithili movement got the important dimensions of the socio-economic
development of Mithila.
Feeling that the movement should reach
the grass-roots in the very interiors of Mithila. I, with the blessings of the
successor of Vinoba (who had also appreciated my medico-social work), Bailvijay
(who had been my patient too), undertook a Padyatra of 138 km during
October 16-26, 1993, which was followed by cycle-march during May 22-29, 1994
and October 14-22, 1994 of 226 and 181 km respectively.* Meeting thousands of people from
hundreds of villages, I came to the conclusion that for the development of this
poorest part of the world (per capita income less than Rs. 1000 per annum), Mithila
State is a must within the framework of the Indian Constitution to identify
its agrarian problems compounded with perennial floods and/or drought, with
least developed infrastructure though having God-gifted, one of the most
fertile soil and brains in the world.
For this, I was the mentor to organise the Mithila
Rajya Sangharsh Samiti under the stewardship of Dr. Jay Kant Mishra of Allahabad who tirelessly
moved across the Mithila at the fag end and of his life with an implanted
pace-maker to arouse the Maithils.
Later, on my
repeated suggestion, Tarakant Jha, ex-advocate-general and ex-president,
the BJP, Bihar * took up the issue very
strongly and now the slogan of Maithils has become, Mithila Rajya Kevalam
through the Mithila Rajya Abhiyan.
Providing an intellectual framework to the
Mithila-Maithili movement, I have
written 102 columns in Maithili in the Ranchi Express touching
almost all points, mostly in the form of travelogues apart from several
unpublished stories and poems of literary taste.
Apart from extensive eight Mithila-Maithili Jagaran Yatras, I
have addressed meetings of Maithils at
Kathmandu, Patna, Guwahati, Kolkata, Konnagar, Naihati, Durgapur, Muri,
Bokaro, Dhanbad, Sindri, Chasnala, Bhuli,Giridih, Jamshedpur, Ghatsila,
Chaibasa, Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Bilaspur, Korba, Raipur, Bhilai, Bhopal,
Indore, Satna, Kanpur, Prayag, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Bhubaneshwar,
Vishakhapatanam, Bhagyanagar (Hyderabad), Tirupati,Madras, Bangalore
Mumbai,Nagpur,Pune, Goa, Karnavati (Ahmadabad), Rajkot, Jamnagar, Kota, Ajmer,
Jaipur, Delhi, Faridabad, Jammu, and in
Mithila’s Janakpur, Marar, Sirha, Lahan, Biratnagar, Jainagar, Khajauli,
Rajnagar, Madhubani, Basopatti, umgaon,
Benipatti, Jhanjharpur Ghoghardiha, Darbhanga, Bharwara, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Dalsing Sarai, Singiaghat, Begusarai, Barauni, Khagaria, Saharsa,
Shah alamnagar (Madhavanand
Nagar), Supaul, Jogbani, Forbesganj, Arariya,Kishanganj, Purnea, Bhagalpur,
Deoghar, and Godda like small or big towns. For Maithili organisational
work, I am regarded as the most
widely travelled person.
Eminent linguist
Dr. Subhadra Jha told in public that he had been a teacher of many but wanted
to be a ‘student’ of Dhanakar (for Maithili work)and when I went to see him,he
sid,"I thought that you were an aged person, yet I stood with my
words."
When I went to meet Dr. Laksman Jha, ex-V.C., LNMU,
Darbhanga, a veteran Mithila protagonist, he had tears in his eyes as if I was
going to fulfill his long cherished dream of Mithila state.
Thgough here too like the NMO,I dedicated myself as a
workers so much so that people sometimes forgot that I was the founder of
the Antarrashtriya Maithili
Parishad(AMP), e.g. I was not called to the dais at Dhanbad in the
X International Maithili Conference on 1.2.2003(though there I addressed a press conference and conducted
other meetings) though I had first convened any such conference for at
Ranchi on 19.6.1993 where the AMP was
founded. Similar incidence happened on 21.4.2005 when Arjun Munda,CM,
Jharkhand graced the Vidyapati Parva organised by the Jharkhand Maithili
Manch, Harmu,Ranchi(though I had induced them
and had also presided over its
foundation meeting on 21.12.1997).I did
not go there the following night
remaining busy in X Maithili
Workers' Training Camp in my quarters which was graced by Dr.(Mrs.) Jennie
Jha,M.B.E.(Member of British Empire) and Dr. Jagannath Mishra, ex-CM,Bihar.*
But by and large Maithl community hounered me from
distant towns to the interior villages
in Mithila. At Saharsa, Prof. Vinay Chaudhary and at Mumbai Prpf. Baiju
Chaudhary named me as the 'fifth great
Thakur'(after Jyotirishwar Thakur, Vidyapati Thakur, Babuajee Thakur and
Dr.C.P.Thakur) as a saviour of Maithili but what I feel I did the duty of a son
and that's all.
At Hyderabad
on 28.1.1996, I had the honour to preside over Vidyapati Parva in which
P.S. Mishra, the Hon’ble Chief Justice of A.P. High Court was the chief guest.
On 15.4.2007, again I attended it as the chief guest.
Maithils should celebrate New Year on Mithila’s
New Year, Mesh Sankranti i.e. Jur-Shital (14th April), I
strongly proposed which the community has accepted and I also asked Maithils
should and without fail mention Mithila in their introduction or posts along
with PIN code.
I have proposed renaming some towns of Mithila like Bagmatipur
(Darbhanga), Gandakipur (Samastipur), Hariharnath (Hajipur), Khudirampur
(Muzaffarpur), Sitaganj (Forbesganj) Madhavanand Nagar (Shah
Alamnagar) Jailalgarh (Jalalgarh), which have already started gaining
acceptance in public mind, and in civic life there, however, it needs early
legislation to give a stamp to these proposed names. On Durgashtami (2nd
October 2003), I went to village Begampur (near Russeraghat) and villagers
gladly renamed their village as Vaishnavi.
I myself edit the Maithili Sandesh
(circulation of 5,000-8,000 copies quarterly, total 2,13,000 copies distributed
free till 40th issue of Dec.l 2012) arousing
millions of Maithils. I regularly write in it a health column and
address the villagers during camps and
treat patients. But ‘any movement is made
by the workers’ and so I have started enrolling part-time and lifetime workers,
through village/town level Maithili workers’ training camps (77 till date).
As
the spokesman of the Maithils of Ranchi, my hour-long discussion with the
Hon’ble ex-Chief Justice, Supreme Court of India, Rang Nath Mishra, Chairman,
the National Human Rights Commission impressed him though later on he wrote to
us to search some other platform for the Maithili’s recognition in the VIII
Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
In
October 1992, I distributed pamphlets, Jagu Maithil Dhir - Awake, the
learned Maithils, (4,000), from the Baruni (to the passengers) to Forbesganj
and Saharsa and then 20,000 for the Mithila State; again for enumerating
Maithili in the Census in February 2001,
I distributed 20,000 (and 3,000 posters got pasted) at Barauni,
Samastipur and Darbhanga stations as well as in the trains.
I also started celebrating Sir George Abraham Grierson’s
birthday (7th January) whose linguistic map is the basis of the territory of
the Mithila state ,
the capital of which I propose should be somewhere near Barauni. Muzaffarpur,
famous internationally for lychees was earlier proposed as Mithila’s
capital by Dr. Laksman Jha (Mithila : A Union Republic, Mithila
Mandal, Darbhanga, 1952; p.185). However, Dr. Jha had not included areas south
of the Ganga (where Maithili’s dialect Angika
i.e. Chhika-Chhiki as per Grierson is spoken), which I propose to
include in Mithila and, hence, its capital at the most centrally located and
industrialized town, Barauni.
I
again convened the Second International Maithili Conference at Madhubani (on my
ancestral land) on Jan. 7-8, 1996 where the emphasis was on the Mithila
State __ separate from Bihar* in
India.
I feel, Nepal ’s
Maithils should also organise themselves without interfering with the
international boundary. In Nepal ,
VIII International Maithili Conference was held at Biratnagar (Dec. 23-24,
2000) where apart from development of Maithili in Nepal , tourism promotion in Mithila
(in Nepal
and India )
was discussed.
In the Nepal Tarai, Third International Maithili
Conference had already been held during April 13-16, 1997 (concluding on Janaki Navami of 2054 Vikram
Samvat) in the holy city of Janakpur, by the Antarrashtriya Maithili
Parishad, in that conference at Sirha, the place of legendary Raja Salhesh,
I persuaded an eminent litterateur, Dr. Bhuvaneshwar Prasad Gurumaita to accept
the responsibility of the President, finding him the most competent person,
though my term as president could have continued for the next two years.
The International Maithili Conferences have
established that for the Mithila-Maithili work, the nodal co-ordinating
organisation is the Antarrashtiya Maithili Parishad (Regd. under
the Societies Registration Act, 1860, Reg. No. 262/1.6.2000). Also,
for involving the student community in
the Mithila Movement, the Mithila Vidyarthi Parishad (MVP) was founded by me at
Saharsa on 12.3.2005.
Though
entirely independent in functionng, the Antarrashtiya
Maithili Parishad had alsoopted for the affiliation
to the Akhil Bhartiya Sahitya Parishad, a nationalist
organisation like the National Medicos Organisation, having the same
ideological roots.
After selling a copy of
the purbotar maithil (after 40 years of selling
of the organiser in my
childhood) on 22.12.2003 night, I
listened on the doordarshan
(T.V.) the news of the inclusion of mailthili
in the VIII schedule of the
Indian constitution* by the lok
Sabha unanimously and i felt as
if one chapter of the struggle in my life was over and the mithila State remains my goal henceforth. In the morning overwhelmed mayanand mishra phoned me, under whose leadership on 25.12.2003, a
victory-procession was held in the Ranchi town, first time Maithils were on
road with abir and gulal.
My
Mithila-Maithili work is not sectarian and hence, I worked out in detail on the
reorganisation of the Indian states with a fully national view (given in the previous epilogue, in brief, which
may need a full book, may be like the other
part of this autobiography when
elaborated with the events of my life
since I closed the main substance of the book in November 1989,which too,I
have deliberately avoided updating in detail).
*By 92nd Amendment in
the Constiution of India, notified on 7.1.2004,in the Gazette of India.
