Dilli yatra : Any stranger’s coming to stranger’s house

First time I visited Dilli probably sometimes in 1978/79 with the Shikshik jagaran Jyoti of JP.
And then for various causes related to NMO till 2002,any other work was subsidiary to that except for once when I had gone there to be in a delegation to meet Vajpayee for the inclusion of Maithili in April 2000 but Vajpayee all of sudden became sick and I returned. Despite application of leaves, I was put in a health centre as a punishment which I did not and had to take 21 days leave when I could rejoin my post. I did not like any pairavi though I was knowing a couple of ministers personally in Vajpayee Govt.

Delhi is our national capital and if anybody want some work of national scale that person needs visiting Delhi.

I feel personally it is not fit for our capital on many counts probably developing a new capital , computerized and of small scale in the vicinity of Jabalpur will be fitter yet Delhi is capital I need going there and I may relocate myself, if I continue in my Maihtili and NMO work as of now.
Every Dilli trip is a memorable one but let me write something about most recent one.
Some times back an ex-employee of SAIL and my villager karnaji came to me for some drugs. I have been intimate to him for many years I work for MECON-SAIL.

I asked him whether he would rejoin any service after his retirement. He saud that he does not intend so and then I offered him to work for Antarrashtriya Maithili Parishad(AMP) which he happily agreed.
I had already decided to attend Faridabad’s Kali Puja organized by Mithila Navyuvak Sangh and Sarita Vihar’s Kali Puja organized by Raman Jha of Bihar Sahyog samiti which have become my perennial affair .
I wished a meeting at Karnji’s house in Dwarka which he agreed happily. It was almost a deepawali Milan for a new settler in delhi. He had been there only a few days back with bag and baggage and I had not his new number and hence when I informed on group e-mail of Maihtils that I was coming an unknown Maithil journalist from Dwarka had replied. Without knowing his village and age and profession I requested him to go to harnaji’s house . He went there and also mailed me details about himself. He was a journalist interested in scince and religion, a topic I too like to discuss with. I thought if I stay there it would be doubly benefial as it has been my habit to stay with potential social workers(of NMO or AMP) and to visit there house to be intimate with them.
This looks awkward to many and any suspicious person will smell something different. It happened this time so. Though the young Maithil (not so younger but younger to me) was very open in his reception one of his intimate, a very senior person indeed, an IPS to say was suspicious of any stranger’s coming to stranger’s house. It was then when that person was aware of that I was a qualified doctor and has also listened to my name connected to Mithila movement(I believe, if not boast, that hardly any intellectual Maihtil would not have a reference to my work of Mithila and so among doctors with nationalistic feelings for the medical work rendered through national medicos organization(NMO).

Yet, his suspicion was not wrong after all he belonged to that department but my host was also a suchha Maithil with a faith in Mithila’s tradition- he told him,”He will put a lock,if suspected in night.”

Well, God saved me from locks! My younger brother became suddenly ill and I had to drop the connecting train at Mugalsarai for Varansi and then I came back by Mahanagari express for Allahabad. In the process, from my brother I could get number of DRM, Railways Jhaji from Mohna village near Jhanjharpur and invited him for attending ensuing XX International Maihtili conference at Kanpur(Dec.20-21). My nephews(students of NIT,Jamshedpur and LTM Medical College,Mumbai with their mother had also been at Varanasi to see my brother who had an overdose of antihypertensive drug and had almost recovered.

At Allahabad soon I got Ajmer bound superfast and at Kapur Premkant Jha was waiting for me for discussing matters related to Maithili Conference. That was a Deepawali evening and I saw Deepawali of many towns and villages I crossed.

The train Unchahar express was almost vacant and I was surprised to find a lady TTE on duty that night! There was an old passenger coming from Namisharanya and I talked with him in Sanskrit. He could speak chaste Sanskrit and was pleased to meet me and was surprised to know that I was an MD; probably he was not aware that Swami Shivananda was also a doctor!

Till Fafund, one passenger listened to my talks attentively and when that old man asked his profession and I told guessing his fitness in police(though he was in civil dress), they were further surprised.

In the meantime my host queried where I was and knowing that I would be reaching in morning he might have taken a sigh of relief!

I was also enquired by Kripanand as to where I was and I was staying with him after Dr. lal Chandra left the same Mayur Vihar. Before that Lal Chandra’s Lady Hardinge’s quarters were my halting station and I remember many years back when NMO was not rooted in delhi once I had slept on the grounds of Smt. Sucheta Kripalani Hospital.

Anyway this time I replied Kripanand not to bother but come to Dwarka meeting directly. From Dilli to New Delhi I came by a train and then took Metroride for Dwarka, The booking girl was very polite and asked me to be sure of the Scetor and I asked my host for that and reached there by a Metrofeeder mininus. While I was waiting for that a rickshaw pullar I guessed rom Mithila and he was from Begusarai.

My host received me and welcomed me. Not only he was from the village of legendary MM Umesh Mishara and his illustrious sons(late Jaikant Mishra most known face among them), his wife was from my neighbourhood village, in fact she was so much excited in Atithi from her area that she forgot to look after milk and I went into kitchen after many years to switch off the gas!

Then we went for meeting where many Maihtils were unknown to each othr and I too saw many faces first ime who all promised for AMP work at Delhi. I was surprised to see Bihar Lok manch’s souvenir which was managed by almost entirely Maithils(later I counted only 123 out of 1001 members were looked to me non_maithils!- That souvenir on my table attracted the attention of a Maithil lady for a uniqe photograph of Devi Durga and took that for painting. Every Maithil women is a painter- ‘Aripan’ is an art to testify them!).

The official of Bihar Lok manch informed that when it was fiunded Shri Mantreshwar Jha ,IAS and seniors like him named that organization so on Bihar! I am not surprised that such person bagged a Maithili award!

This double life our seniors have been living.

See what others are doing.Today’s results of Raj Thakre’s MNS who is neither having Hindu ideology nor so called secular Indian but they triumph.

There in the meeting was Ghanshyam who happily agreed for a Maithili workers camp at Burari (Dec.22-25). I cold see him after a long tome. He had been a close confide of mine while I was at Bangalore in posting, he was working for Youth of Mithila.

Youth of Mithila should awake! There awakening will be in the interest of nation. Anil Sah, a young Maithil I saw first him on 2.11.2005 in a Sarita Vihar kali Puja function is still in regular contact with me and had been with me in recent Yatra of Mithila. He was made Secretary of Dilli State, AMP.

With Kripanand I was again on bike to reach sarita Vihar where I talked with a malled group this year of Maithil youth. Again Maithils are pillars there but are mesmerized for word Bihar which has no real entity but was thwarted upon us dismembering Mithila by Mohammad Giyasuddin Tugalaque in 1328.

When I spoke this in my address at Mithila Navyuvak sangh,Faridabad’s mammoth gathering of 5000+ persons, the chief guest Staleja , a councilor 0f BJP, donating 1.51 lakh rupees for kalisthan mandap, repeated this that Mithila statehood is a must and Maithila(and Bhojpuri san Faridabad, Mumbai will have industrial zero- Raj Thakre should note that!).

Last year Cong(I) MP, AICC Secretary, RC Khuntia had echoed that, Every language needs state, demand of Mihtila state is genuine.”

My visit to faridabad started inconsequentially when someone on 9.7.2001 invited me to come while I had gone to sangam Vihar’s new office of AB Mithila sangh. Late Bhogendra Jha, ex-MP was there who had criticized to Chhati and mool gotra etc. on a Marxian vein which I had criticized severely and the Maithils appreciated me.

On someone’s invitation 15.11.2001 I was there and was welcomed by Amarath Jha ‘a’(among many amaranths). And then onwards I have been visiting there and am honoured by them by heart.

In 2002, Devendra yadav, MP spoke so much that we could not have time(though I was willing to say that thanks Maithil’s grace that you who in April 2000 had refused to sign on a Memorundum for Maihtili recognition when I had chided him strongly, had come to Maithili Darbar!)

In In 2003 I could not go there.

On 11.11.2004 I was there(probany my friend of ABVP days. Ex-Minister, maybe Ravishankar Prasad was exclaimed to find me there so far from Mithila).

On 2.11.2005, Rajiv shukla, Cong MP was there and took my notes on Mithila state

On 22.11.2006, I came from Bangalore and chief guest Ranjit Ranja, MP,LJP, repeated my voices in her speech calling me thrice’our guardian from Bangalore,”

In 2007, I was confused after a tiring car journey from Bangalore to Ranchi and while in way at Gaya I could know that the function was on the same day and I missed.

It was 19th kalipuja celebration and I could attend 7th time. I might not have gone this year had not a villager at Sijhouliya, Phulparas spotted me in his village that he had seen me at faridabad and had stressed again to come.

Gradually I think,I should concentrate my leaves in Mithila for movement but sure such gatherings of Maithils can contribute a lot. And among all Dehi/NCR has a potential role .

Again on high speed drive with Kripanand, carrying Mother Kali’s beautifully framed portrait, we reached sarita Vihar where Puja has been turned to orchestra party leaving guests addressal which we were giving in initial years! Probably small is beautiful! Kripanand left me at New delhi station and I went to my berth in last train towards east Reanchal express) which left in time and reached Allahabad in time.

We went to Anil’s shouse for dinner and he packed so much sattu that taking that next morning at Allahabad I had no idea that sattu with water will swell too much and I could not eat that and gave part of that to a poor boy in Lal Quila express!

Anyway it was not my desire like Ayrangjen’s father Shajenha to take one grain”Sattu” when he was imprisoned by son. And one work’, -to teach students;

-listening to which son retorted-“Grown old but hukumat karne ki tammanna nahi gayee.”

Maybe youth I like so but two youths were at hot words on the question of putting Kali portrait in Lal Quila express anad other of Dehri (who had his friend TTE for Rs.10 each day journey without ticket) in Ranchi bound intercity from Mugalsarai in sleeper coach. Of course I found a young Dubey ,CA, working for IFFCO who took interest in my talks on various points.

Of course in Lal Quila when one Inspector Police traveling of course without ticket asked me who should have been best PM,if not VP,Rajiv, Nehru,I quipped me( in past life I might have been subas and in present life am better and more knowledgeable and honest than those numerated and that person having praise for VP,Mayavati had a tight lip!)

When I got down at Ranchi and reached house safely with photo I took a sigh of relief and forgot what many things happened in train.(0r will happen tomorrow..in train.. which has become my house living with strangers with a faith unseen and many of them have become my friends and some in close social work with me.

On permitting friends of opposite sexes in hostels

On permitting friends of opposite sexes in hostels
One may have some impact on generational shift but while co-education has been welcomed by the society, co-habitation is not seen on the same line. Every society has its own value/ Laxman Rekha and any institution runs as per its norms. While such an advice may remove some angularities, it may add some unwanted and maybe adding to a few more cases of serious problems(including ‘suicides’).
Whether whole day meeting in libraries and college rooms are not enough that visiting hostels still needed?(Do not be mistaken I also had visited my girl class friend’s hostel’s visiting room- now she is a roaring practitioner of her locality, but let me say had we gone more closer, I might have to find Vivekanada rock even earlier. Remember once such friend do not comply to other’s emotion, she is like a rock herself!
Ours is not a permissive society and TV mediated soaps offering such models will increase rift in friendship and more failures in marriage than pleading for ‘openness.’
I recall in an episode of AIDS International Congress. In 1992,when I almost chided Nalini Singh, the media person, ’Chairing the session you should not prophesize distribution of condoms over ethical norms,’ when some Bangalorean Mod –Women activists had objected to me saying,” As mother in law we will give condoms to our daughter in laws.”
Hostel visiting of friends of other sex need some prohibitions and institutions should take care of that as per their norm.

Suicide is the greatest crime because it makes any crime to be done impossible- Students should evolve self help group to reduce rate of suicide

Today I came across a blog. Nicely written on increasing suicidal tendency in higher institutes. The generational change in attitude is ok but one must remember that this (Hindu)civilization of ours in too old to say precisely and we have to remember that the answers to many maladies rest more going away from the 'norms' than 'sticking' with some of them.
Let me exemplify it. Only yesterday I read in a Hindi daily(Hindustan) that a doctor son( Jha)of a senior officer Jha committed suicide in a Ranchi Ashok ashram apartment for his failure in marriage with a daughter of other senior Maithil officer working in Delhi with whom a divorce petition was pending on court for judgement.
Apart from titles that they are from my Maithil Brahmin clan, I do not know them bit share a point with the victim that when I had my failure in marriage in 1989,with my lovely MBBS wife who thought I would earn; I wanted to commit suicide and place and mode too I had decided,’ to jump in sea from the rocks of Vivekanand Rock,Kanyakumari," (I had collected in 1963 when I was only 8 years old, some money by selling 10 paise stamps at my home town, Forbesganj on Indo-Nepal border, where probably Jaya too had studied)for which like a squirrel for putting some sands bringing on her body when Ramsetu was being made). I thought to write my views as ’ suicidal note' my autobiography (though written those 169 pages then and due to Advani's PS Chopra's saying of protocol of 15 days when Advani was DYPM, it could not be released and in 'suspended animation' that 'The Autobiography of an Unknown Medico' is enlarged to 368 pages with no publisher).
If a boy is given a 'constructive mould' suicide can be decreased.
After all why hankering for IITs itself! When we were students (in 1970 I had SSC) I was not aware of IIT. Modern IT has widened the awareness. Whether it has also not increased ‘ rat race' for physical things.
Unless the modern advances are joined with the 'spiritual satiety' crimes of every type will increase including 'suicide',(which according to a great philosopher Chesterton, a friend of G. Bernard Shaw, "is the greatest crime because it makes any crime to be done impossible)"
Therefore one should train is/her child to(and first himself/herself) to be satisfied with whatever results or things could have.
Then the intellectual objection will be that without competition progress will be halted. Well, one should be therefore trained for 'healthy competition' like games.
And finally, there are some ‘ suicidal trailts' ,I feel genetically endowed too which needs taking consultations from trained psychiatrists(or mature persons and friends).
If any boy/girl says 'wants to commit suicide' he/she needs immediate treatment with antidepressant drugs. Any such uttering should be taken seriously.

As a doctor I face such cases and know in the vicinity of Shyamali colony(where in famous schools such case are not infrequent. So much so that one of my senior friend, a retired GM of SAIL, RN Chatterjee had for long taken the project of counselling of such students. One of the causes of such cases are guardians high expectations. True, in this colony where scores of IITians/BITians(in previous days BIT Sindri and or Mesra had almost equal and even better reputation than IITs when they were in their infancy) work forget that even if they were ‘toppers’, among the new students of such high reputed schools will have only one ‘topper’.
And every son is not like Syma Prasad(of Asutosh Mukherjee) or Amarnath Jha( of Ganganath Jha) or Damodar Thakur(of Pushkar Thakur). Whether intelligence has any relation to genes. Human Genome Projects said ‘No,’ but I had doubt and in one of medical conferences, famous Indian geneticist, Dr. Das Gupta, was non-committal on my query and now some papers are coming that this does have relations.

In 1977, I had visited Vashishtha Narayan, topper of Higher Seconday in Bihar who was then famous mathematician and was admitted under the care of Dr. Davis, at Kanke ,Ranchi. I asked Dr. Davis relationship between ‘intelligence and insanity.” He explained something then beyond the scope of a IV Year MBBS student but he appreciated me. He told me that Vashishtha ill health has a bearing from his failed marriage (with a lady from maybe some high up, he himself was a son of policeman and could get into Netarhat School).
While returning from Kanke, I went to meet Dr. H.C. Mishra(of Jaya’ neighbourhood, Gosaigaon village) . He had been very affectionate to me since my ISc days and he even had corrected my notes on Air, water, etc. Dr. Mishra told me that Vashishtha’s problembs were due to high expectations from him (Vashishtha had joined ISI but could not produce the required number of research papers).
Then I asked the same question from Dr.KC Prasad, just retired now as HOD, Mathematics, Ranchi University. He told me that when Vashishtha was admitted in the Science College,Patna(then aspiration for any brilliant student of Bihar- I too got an opportunity but could not take admission due to several abscesses in body) Vashishtha was allotted a room in the Faraday House there besides his. That year MSc batch was not good enough and once the famous teacher, Narendra Nath asked some problem which could not be solved by MSc students. He had just other class in BSc I and he put the same problem which was solved by Vashishtha. Pleased Narendra Nath recommended Vashishtha’s name for special Honours examination ; University did so arrange only for him; he was spared of pass subjects’ papers of chemistry and physics; Narendra Nath used to come to hostel to guide Vashishtha for Math (Hons) papers and he got honours and then went abroad and then the story of joining ISI, marriage with a Bengali girl(probably) coming from an aristocratic family and his mental breakdown!
So what was the cause- his genes, his sudden uplift in academics, his failures in expectations from ISI or failure in marriage by accomplished wife- one or some of them or all!
Probably all have contributed.
See the change in society in one generation. For some 20 years, Science College did not remain Mecca for brilliants- it became CBSE DAV/DPS.
Guardians aspired more than students for their child to join IIT. IIT coaching has been a 500 crore rupees industry- more famous than Kota cement. ( Now they will turn to +2 80 percentile business!)
Prof. Yashpal was saying yesterday on TV that Indian IITs should diversify to attract talents other than from coaching group and so 80 percentile has been said(not per cent but top 20 per cent students of any board can appear for IITs). Kapil Sibbal has to refrain after Nitish wrote a letter that 80 per cent marks will obstruct rural Biharis to enter into. I feel Bihar Board should amend itself to give equally higher marks as do CBSE Schools and GOI should see all boards mark at equal grade for the same pattern of question.
I know an honours in medicine(75 per cent marks do fetch an honours in medical subjects ) is as difficult as to get a first class in English in BA/MA. Because the examiners themselves had not got that mark will not award to any student.
I said once at Kolkata, only examiner of Dr.Rajendra Prasad was honest that he found ‘examinee better than examiner,’ while in fact every class has at least one student better than the teacher lest the students become doctor, engineer and teacher retiring at the same school.

I am surprised why so much importance to IIT itself. . Raman, Khorana,Venkatraman were not products of IIT. Any IIT/AIIMS is not out of India. Indian taxpayers have been bled to shape t you and you should be conscious of that responsibility. It is not a station to go abroad for some petty gains.

Brilliant students do not opt for research but became manager. Many IITians find such fabulous job in the market more on their other talents than the talent based on PCM/ engineering skills. Several go to IAS- this years’ topper is an IIT,Roorki girl.
The mad rat race to materialism will hamper the growth of science.

Any student once admitted to any institute may not maintain the same rank and as said Fs can become better. Who can be better F than Einstein himself?
Students should evolve self help group to reduce rate of suicide and institutions should make committees to help stressed students Teachers too need counselled for not making students stressed.
If any such self help group is formed anywhere I will be happy to share my experience.

Floods in south India and in Mithila

Floods in south India and in Mithila

Yesterday night(4th October 2009) I had a long telephonic talk with Dinesh K. Mishra on the matter of floods in south India for which he did not spoke much for want to data.

However Mithila ravaged perineally with floods has peers-Gujarat almost every year and northern Karnataka and eastern AP which are not due to ice melting glaciers of Himalyas but due to maybe de-silting and deforestation.

Another point is sure that now inter linking of river Ganga cauvery is hardly of any relevance. Post-Vajpayee in Rahul-proxy era when rahul had said no to it ,it has hardly any taker.

Yet I feel someone should come up with a comprehensive flood studies of country.

Dineshji mentined one name(I forgot) who has compiles such data of 100 years.

Dr.R.K.Misra, ex-director, BAU,Kanke mentined me some Chaudhari’s work on inter linking o frivers.

Initially I was enthusiastic to that but reading an article in the journal of ciast accountants, I felt it was taxing to north and my letter to that notion had appeared in The Hindu while I was in Bangalore.

Some months back ex-President APJ Kalam was at Ranchi and had asked same question as he was an advocate of linking of rivers but he too replied in non-committal way as to what wuld happen for lakhs of tribals when the routes of rivers will be changed.

My concern with floods in Mithila is that with four way lane coming up and broad guage with no adequate drainage, these will make floods worse.

A villager of Sijhuliya Dhairyanarayan Jha said that though high bridges were made at hs village no one bothered to ask local persons who could have said that there area was near flooded in the memory of 100 years and high bridge there was unnecessary.

Maybe engineers have missed some other points where it would have been necessary and if they supposed to provide drainage on fixed imaginary distances will it result in flood waters to take some course ruining many villages.

Dineshji is an expert to it and it is always delightful to talk to him though I know my limitation of knowledge on such issues being a doctor.

Dineshji was leaving to Guwahati with a group of some young persons from Koshi-Kamla flood belt to study the life style of the people of that area how they could live with floods.

I feel strongly Maithils should learn to live with floods than making embankments which are destined to be broken a day or other.

Inter-linking may be done of some selected portion but ambitious Ganaga cauvery may be dismissed.

Vachaspatis Murtis

Vachaspatis Murtis

Today on 5th Ocober 2009 I had long very long conversation with Bauji(Kashinath Jha) whom villagers had appointed member the Vachaspati Statue Committee of the AMP. In fact when had phoned I was doing daily tarpan which I am doing since some days as being advised by Prof. Udayshankar while we were at Dalsingsarai some months back.

I phoned Kashiji and took the numbers of the owners of the land which was once upon a time was the seat of Vachaspati in 9th century.

I had one of the longest phone talk9around 51 minutes) with Chandradhar Jha, retd. Prof. Maithili, Patna University, his nephew but elder in age Kameshwar Jha, retired engineer in-chief and brother of Dr. Gyaneshwar Jha, senior me in DMCH.

All were willing that the place be developed and they will happily donate the land.

Kashiji also made me talk to Mahesh Jha son of late Pt. sahdev Jha whose life time work was to establish the fact enunciated by Madhusudan Saraswati that Mithila’s advait was Bhavadwait which does not require Kavalya or renunciation as propagated by Shankaracharya. He was also of the opinion that Shankara did not visit Mandan and so called shastrartha between them was not held.

A book on Sahdev Jha is to be published and as I had promised Indra Narayan Jha of Sarara, who worked in CCL and is settled at Lalit Colony,Ranchi that I will contribute an article on Pt. Jha’s work which I had already quoted while delivering a lecture on philosophers of Mithila in honour of Dr.Adyacharan Jha on Dec.12,2008 at Patna Book Fair. When Mahesh Jha reminded me I promised him to give two articles by 25th October 2009(on Bhavadwait:The Vedanta of Maithils and Shankara’s Visit to Mandan Misra- where my view will be to see Shankara’s visit as visit of one great scholar to other great scholar who agreed to salvage Sanatan Dharma by Buddhist onslaught. ) when we will meet at the residence of Mithileshwar Jha for Vachaspati Murti in Thadhi as well as Samaul my village near Pandaul where Vachaspati II, the great Karmkandi and author of 41 books was born.

What a similarity- at Thadhi also Misrain and Bhamati pond(called Punarna) and at Samaul again Misrain and Chhotki ponds. Seems Bhamati was also second wife of Vachapati I that he loved her more and named the famous book on her.

It was the idea of Dr. Sureshwar Jha that statues be built for both and I wish in a single stroke fund will be generated for both(least people will get bored one after other Vachaspati) and I hope HH Shankaracharya to inaugurate both on a single day forenoon at Thadhi and afternoon at Samaul.

Now that Thadi’s landowners have assured me al help, Samaul’s land is with our family itself and my mother had purchased 5 kathhas of land from one of my cousin nearby which we will donate to Vachaspati II’s deeh development.

Gradually I feel such development of important place be done through Mithila Seva manch, an agency of Antarrashtriya Maithili Parishad which will have ledger page for each such work and the passbook will be shown to villagers’ representative concerned that the donation given by that particular village had been remitted to that specific project.

AMP hopes at least one day salary be sent to the account(number will be sent to the aspirants) and soon many such social work will appear in Mithila.

Bundelkhand’s Water crisis

Bundelkhand’s Water crisis

Though I am opposed to the ambitious Ganga-Kavery linking with interlinking of piennisular rivers, I feel Yamuna-Chambal interlinking may help parched Budelkhand which is making life there difficult.

When I discussed this with flood and water expert Dinesh K. Mishra he said that it may be a possibility though he has not studied much beyond Koshi and other rivers of Mithila.

Rahul’s espousing of Bundelkhand might have irked UP and MP CMs, problem of Bundelkhand is a reality.

I have been associated closely with Bundelkhand as two of my brothers were in that reason and also Chaumas , apublication by MP Govt. on Bundeli culture I am receiving regularly.

I wish some remeady to Budeli miseries do come in view, including statehood tot hat to press the problems on proper for a.
